Tuesday February 13th, 2011 - In a short statement addressed to the nation of Iran Mehdi Karroubi expressed his appreciation for the people's presence in the peaceful demonstrations that took place yesterday and strongly condemned the violence that led to the martyrdom and injury of a number of citizens.
According to reports by Saham News Karroubi's statement reads:
As the honorable people of Iran are aware, we announced the Green movement's solidarity with the recent anti-authoritarian uprisings in the Middle East and requested a permit in good faith, despite the fact that there was no need for such a permission, in order to hold a rally on February 14th 2011 [25 Bahman 1389] in support of the recent victory of the Muslim nations of Tunisia and Egypt. Unfortunately, since issuing this request we have faced nothing but insults from newspapers and media outlets associated with the government. In addition, in order to prevent us from joining the people and participating in the demonstrations our telephone communications have been cut off and we have been forced into house arrest.
Based on the reports we have received the peaceful demonstrations by the people once again turned violent as a result of the behavior of individuals whose role and affiliation with specific institutions is evident to all, leading to mass injuries and numerous arrests.
We were also informed of the unfortunate martyrdom of a student named Saneh Jaleh and a second citizen Mohammad Mokhtari. In addition to strongly condemning these brutal and inhumane acts, we would like to express our condolences to the families of these two great Iranian citizens and warn [the government] to remove the cotton balls from their ears and hear the voices of the people before it is too late. Violent acts and opposition to the demands of the people will only work for so long. Avoid the fate of other governments and learn from the people.
Free political prisoners and remove your suffocating hands from the throats of independent newspapers and media outlets. Remain faithful to the promise and covenant you have made with the people known as the Constitution.
I remain faithful to the promise and covenant I made with the people and their demands, to the ideals of Imam Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution of 1979. I hereby announce that I do not fear threats and just as I demonstrated in 1963 as a humble soldier of the nation of Iran, I will continue to pay what ever price necessary on this glorious path.
