Mrs Rahnavard’s eye surgery took place three months after her physician had recommended immediate treatment.

Saturday September 20th, 2014 [Kaleme] – The leader of the Green Movement, Mir Hossein Mousavi was transferred to a eye clinic on Saturday afternoon in order to undergo eye surgery. The need for surgery was recommended by an ophthalmologist approximately two months ago. Mousavi was accompanied by his wife Zahra Rahnavard. His daughters were however denied the right to accompany their father and to be present for the procedure.

Kaleme reports that the surgery was successful and Mousavi is in good condition. Despite the fact that specialists had recommended a similar treatment for Zahra Rahnavard, to date she has been denied eye surgery. Mousavi’s daughters confirm that they were kept in the dark with regards to his surgery. The family is hopeful that the ruling establishment will take the necessary steps to ensure that Rahnavard’s eye condition is also treated in an expeditious manner.

Latest Report on the Condition of the Leaders of the Green Movement ~ Illegal House Arrest Approaches 1300 Days

Latest Report on the Condition of the Leaders of the Green Movement ~ Illegal House Arrest Approaches 1300 Days
By Banooye Sabz
September 1, 2014

The following is a summary of the latest report from Kaleme dated Sunday September 1st, 2014 regarding the condition of the Leaders of the Green Movement Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, now under illegal house arrest at their residence on Akhtar Street since February 2011.

- More than a year following the election promises by Hassan Rohani, opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard continue to remain under an illegal house arrest.

- Despite the fact that we are fast approaching the 1300th day of this illegal house arrest, there has been no accountability by any legal entity or official within the ruling establishment for the reasons behind and the length of this illegal detention.

- All political efforts to work towards a possible lifting of Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi’s illegal house arrest have failed.

- The security measures surrounding Mousavi and Rahnavard’s illegal house arrest have become more stringent in the past few months.

- The leader of the Green Movement and his wife have been deprived of regular visits to Zahra Rahnavard’s ailing, old mother over the past few months. Despite the fact that Mousavi and Rahnavard have not been afforded legal due process, under the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran, all prisoners nevertheless have the right to visit their immediate family members.

- Mousavi and Rahnavard’s daughters have been allowed weekly visitation with their parents. The date and times of the weekly visitation have however been erratic and unpredictable.

- Mousavi and Rahnavard are deprived of all communication with the outside world during the week. Their family members are not allowed to contact them under any condition other than the weekly one and a half hour visitations.

- Since Ramadan, the one and a half hour visitations have taken place in a building belonging to the ministry of intelligence, across from Mousavi and Rahnavard’s residence. Though the family is allowed to have dinner together, video cameras have been installed throughout the property. The entire visit is filmed and all conversations are recorded.

- The security measures during the weekly visitation have become increasingly more stringent. The number of security officers present during the weekly visitations has increased in the past few months.

- The family continues to be concerned about the sanitary conditions surrounding the illegal house arrest. There is also significant concern regarding the possible contamination of the living environment and the food provided to the leaders of the Green Movement. Mir Hossein’s daughters have repeatedly warned high level officials of their concerns, demanding an official inquiry into the living conditions and environment at Akhtar prison. The fact that Zahra Rahnavard is once again suffering from shaking in her hands only further augments the family’s concerns regarding potential contamination of the living space and the food given to Mousavi and Rahnvard; particularly as both Mousavi and Rahnavard were in excellent health prior to their illegal house arrest.

- Mousavi’s family has repeated stated that even if government officials are not in a position to lift the house arrest, they should at minimum address the issues surrounding their parents’ illegal house arrest, such as ensuring a safe and healthy environment, providing them access to newspapers, allowing regular telephone contact with family members during the week, etc. Unfortunately the unacceptable conditions remain in place despite the promises by Hassan Rohani’s new government.

- Despite examinations by physicians and a written recommendation for treatment, both Mousavi and Rahnavard continue to be deprived of medical treatment. Both have developed issues with their vision during their illegal house arrest. Although physicians trusted by the government and the family have recommended eye surgery for both Mousavi and Rahnavard, no steps have been taken in recent weeks to address this issue and they remain deprived of treatment.

- Mousavi and Rahnavard’s daughters have refuted the recent rumors of a meeting between their parents and Shamkhani the head of the Supreme National Security Council, reiterating that there parents have had no meetings with the ruling establishment including any members of the newly elected government. Their isolation has led many to believe that the opposition leaders have been forgotten.

- The family reports that Mir Hossein Mousavi continues to receive cardiac treatment at home.

- Though Mousavi and Rahnavard have been provided with access to a number of art related books and magazines, they remain deprived of access to any newspapers or news source related to the outside world. Outside the weekly visitation with their daughters and a phone call to Rahnavard’s mother during the weekly visitations and a handful of phone calls to other member of the family, Mousavi and Rahnavard remain incommunicado.

- More than a year following the election promises of now president Hassan Rohani and the post election statements by the government spokesperson and other political figures, promising an end to the illegal house arrest of the leaders of the Green Movement, no specific action has been taken to ensure the freedom of Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi. The relative silence of the newly elected government regarding this matter, coupled with the lack of any tangible result has led many of Rohani’s supporters to lose hope regarding his campaign promises, leading Rohani to reiterate his determination to implement his campaign promises in the past few days. Although the priorities as per insiders remains elsewhere, the government of Hassan Rouhani has yet to define specific actions and a timeline for campaign promises such as the lifting of the illegal house arrest of the Leaders of the Green Movement, the release of political prisoners and easing of the security environment facilitating the creation of political parties and freedom of the press just to name a few.

URGENT BREAKING NEWS – Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi & Spouses Arrested & Transferred to Heshmatiyeh Prison

URGENT BREAKING NEWS – Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi & Spouses Arrested & Transferred to Heshmatiyeh Prison

February 28, 2011

Monday February 28th 2011 – BREAKING NEWS -The leaders of the Green Opposition Movement in Iran Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroub and their spouses Zahra Rahnavard and Fatemeh Karroubi, have been arrested and transferred to Heshmatiyeh prison in Tehran.

According to the latest reports received by Kaleme, their arrest and transfer to Heshmatiyeh prison has been confirmed, however, the time and date of this transfer remains unclear.

The government of the Islamic of Iran had remained absolutely silent with regards to the recent restrictions and house arrest of the companions of the Green Movement, leading to much speculation and uncertainty regarding their whereabouts and well being. Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughters had also repeatedly tried to visit with their parents by going to Akhtar street [location of their parents' residence], only to face more ambiguity and contradictions and denied all contact with their parents. The lights to the residences of Mousavi and Karroubi were also off over the past few days. It looks as though the families of the Green opposition leaders Mousavi and Karroubi were denied contact with them in order to ensure secrecy regarding the location to which they had been transferred. The lack of news and refusal by government authorities to take responsibility for the events also sparked numerous media outlets to report on and question the whereabouts of the Green opposition leaders.

It is worth mentioning that Saham News, the website for Mehdi Karroubi reported that one of Karroubi’s neighbors had witnessed their transfer from their residence at around midnight on Thursday. The eye witness reported the arrival of 8 security vans in front of Karroubi’s residence and the entrance to the parking lot, stating that after a few minutes they all left the area in a car that left the parking structure.

In other news, after the contradictory and ambiguous reports regarding the recent illegal house arrest and restrictions on Mousavi, Karroubi and their spouses Iran’s Attorney General stated today: “The Prime Minister during the 8 year holy war with Iraq [Mousavi], the two times former Head of the Parliament of the Islamic Republic [Karroubi] and their spouses have been arrested and transferred to Heshmatiyeh prison on orders of high ranking Iranian officials.

Unconfirmed: Karroubi & Mousavi Transferred to Undisclosed House in the Outskirts of Tehran

February 26, 2011

February 26th, 2011 – Saham News (media outlet for Mehdi Karroubi): Following the conflicting news in the past few days regarding the house arrest and imprisonment of the two leaders of the Green Opposition Movement in Iran, a source from The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has stated that Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi are not under house arrest and have been transferred to a “secure house” in the outskirts of Tehran. The same source denied earlier reports by a number of online news outlets regarding the possible mistreatment and physical abuse of the two leaders of the Green movement. The source also added Mousavi and Karroubi are not being held in a prison.

It is worth mentioning that to date, no official [government] source has assumed responsibility for the informal arrest of the two reformist leaders. In addition, in an unprecedented move, without summoning or charging political opponents, [the government of the Islamic Republic] is now secretly arresting political opponents, cutting their relationship with the outside world. Some reports by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran suggest that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are now responsible for the detention of the leaders of the Green Opposition Movement.

While it was assumed that Mehdi Karroubi, one of the opposition leaders was under house arrest at his residence, a few hours ago one of his neighbors informed the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that security agents are no longer deployed on his street, stating: “I am certain they are no longer in their home. The windows are all broken and the house is empty. Farmanieh’s North Dibaji neighborhood houses a large number of embassies and as a result is generally a highly secure area where police make routine calls. Although many [government] authorities live in this neighborhood, both last night and today the Karroubi residence has been extremely quiet and unlike the past, there are no security agents in sight. Despite the fact that Karroubi’s house is located in such a dense area, in the past few days, plain clothes agents have thrown sound bombs into the building, disturbing the peace and quite of neighbors and security forces have done nothing to stop them. The street was filled with security agents yesterday yet today it is extremely quiet, there is no one in sight and there is a rumor around town that they have been arrested.”

It is worth mentioning that in an open letter, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard’s children also wrote that the lights to their parents’ residence have been off for three consecutive nights. An eye witness from the Pasteur neighborhood also informed the Campaign that there is no longer any comings and goings around Pasteur street, not even to deliver food and other necessities. In addition, two iron barriers have been installed at the entrance to their street, blocking all entry into the area.

BREAKING NEWS – Mousavi Contacts His Close Relatives From House Arrest
By Banooye Sabz
February 20, 2011

Sunday February 20th, 2011 – Roozonline reports that according to their close relatives, despite being under house arrest, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, two leaders of the Green movement remain resilient and are both in excellent spirits.

According to their close relatives, Mir Hossein Mousavi, prime minister during the eight year holy war with Iraq, contacted his family briefly yesterday and informed them of the well being of himself and his wife Zahra Rahnavard. During this brief telephone conversation, Mousavi stated that he and his wife remain at their home, denying the rumors that they have been transferred to an undisclosed location.

Mousavi also explained that this was the first opportunity he had been given to make a phone call and asked how everyone was doing. Mousavi had also contacted his family briefly on Thursday.

During Thursday’s brief telephone conversation, Mousavi informed his relatives that his body guards had been dismissed and replaced by security officers and that the new security personnel was now also in charge of providing them with food. He also stated that neither he nor his wife Zahra Rahnavard have access to even local newspapers.

According to his close relatives, Mousavi was in excellent spirits. Dr. Rahnavard has not contacted her family to date.

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have been in house arrest since February 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389], a house arrest that began after Mousavi published a message [thanking the honorable people of Iran for their large presence in the streets and extending his condolences to the families of the two Green martyred on that day] and led to his residence being surrounded and he and his wife becoming incommunicado.

All phones and internet connection at Mousavi’s residence remain cut off. According to his close relatives, except for the brief telephone contact yesterday and on Thursday, there has been no other contact with them to date.

Mousavi's Residence Converted into a Prison, an Iron Barrier Installed at the Entrance to his Residence

Mousavi's Residence Converted into a Prison, an Iron Barrier Installed at the Entrance to his Residence
Saturday, February 19, 2011

February 19th, 2011 - According to reports by a number of employees of the Office of the President and patients and physicians at Shahid Hospital located near Akhtar street [the street where Mousavi's residence is also located] "Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard's residence is being converted into a prison as agents proceed to install what looks like an iron barrier at the entrance of their residence."

In a phone conversation with Kaleme, a number of noble workers of the Office of the President reported on [government] agents busily working on the creation of a long, iron barrier at the entrance to Mousavi's residence. It looks as though the events occurring in and around Mousavi's residence are reminiscent of Ahmand Jannati's comments during one of the recent Friday prayers in Tehran when he demanded that the "residences of the leaders of the sedition be converted into prisons."

In the recent months the restrictions designed to further limit Mousavi and Rahnavard's communication with the outside world have slowly increased. The restrictions on Mir Hossein Mousavi increased in late summer this year when the attacks on Mehdi Karroubi's residence and the offices of the Marajeh [Grand Ayatollahs] first occurred, culminating with the mistreatment of journalists and other well known personalities attempting to visit his residence.

The restrictions on Mousavi and Rahnavard entered a new phase six months ago, when a security van was parked outside Mousavi's offices on the corner of Ferdowsi and North Kargar street in Tehran, preventing various groups and well known personalities from entering his office. At times even a number of Marajeh [Grand Ayatollahs] were arrested temporarily and released after a few hours of street interrogations. Some were taken to the police station and released after providing written commitments that they would no longer attempt to visit with Mousavi.

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Dr. Zahra Rahnavard's house arrest formally began after the February 14th, 2011 demonstrations [in support of the people of Egypt and Tunisia]. As of February 16th, Mousavi and Rahnavard have been incommunicado and there is no news what so ever on their condition and well being. In addition, Mousavi's bodyguards have been dismissed and replaced with security agents.

Mousavi and Rahnavard's relatives have been left in the dark with regards to their condition in recent days and the agents posted around their residence have prevented people from approaching their house. It is worth mentioning that all communication with Mousavi and Rahnavard including telephone and internet contact has been cut off. With the installation of an iron barrier outside their residence, their house arrest has now entered a new phase and the intentions of judicial and security officials with regards to Mousavi and Rahnavard remain unclear.

Concerns Grow As Lack of Information on Condition of Mir Hossein Mousavi & Zahra Rahnavard Continues
Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Wednesday February 16th, 2011- According to reports from Jaras, as of yesterday Tuesday February 15th, 2011 and after Mir Hossein Mousavi published a short statement thanking the noble citizens of Iran for their extensive presence in the February 14th [25 Bahman] rallies [in support of the people of Egypt and Tunisia], Mousavi's residence has been completely surrounded by security officers, and he remains incommunicado. Even his daughters have no news of him and his wife Dr. Zahra Rahnavard. Mr. Mousavi's landlines have been cut off and his security personnel have informed his family that a number of intelligence agents have entered their office and are preventing him from having any communication with the outside world. Mousavi's daughter who attempted to visit with her parents last night witnessed a van at the entrance of their street, making it impossible to enter the street even by foot. Upon complaining to the agents inside the van she was informed that their presence was ordered by Tehran's Prosecutor. The agents have installed antennas around Mousavi's residence making it impossible for mobile phones to have any reception. Despite the fact that 24 hours have passed since Mousavi's house arrest, his close relatives are still unable to contact him. They are not even sure at this time whether Mr. Mousavi and Mrs. Rahnavard are at home, or if they have been transferred to a different location. This lack of information has of course increased concerns about the well being of these two leaders of the Green movement.

Mousavi's daughters made the following statement to Jaras' reporter last night: "We are concerned because we have been left completely in the dark. We are unaware of what is going on behind these closed doors and the unimaginable acts being committed against them. We don't know what has happened to Mousavi and Rahnavard. Who is responsible for their protection? We don't even know if our parents are in the house or if they have been moved to another location."

It is worth mentioning that a few hours ago, after the funeral services of martyr Saneh Jaleh, an organized group was seen moving towards the residence of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard. By announcing Mr. Mousavi's home address, a number of government sites have now laid the foundation for the arrival of other plain clothes agents outside their residence.

Mir Hossein Mousavi Issues Statement Regarding the 25th of Bahman Demonstrations

Mir Hossein Mousavi Issues Statement Regarding the 25th of Bahman Demonstrations
Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Tuesday February 15th 2011 - In a statement addressed to the nation, Mir Hossein Mousavi congratulated the people of Iran for the glorious demonstrations that took place on the 14th of February 2011 [25 Bahman 1389] and expressed his condolences regarding the martyrdom of the children of the Green movement, reiterating that the Green movement takes pride in relying on the immense strength and independence of the great people of Iran.

In a short message issued one day after the demonstrations of the 25th of Bahman, the Prime Minister during the 8 year holy war [against Iraq] stated that these glorious demonstrations were attacked on two fronts, on the one hand by the power mongers whose goal is to continue to hold on to money and power and on the other by foreigners and international opportunists who look for their own interests. According to Kalame, the complete content of Mir Hossein Mousavi's message is as follows:

To the honorable nation of Iran,

I salute you. The glorious demonstrations of the 25th of Bahman [February 14th, 2011], a great achievement for our nation and the Green Movement, took place despite the skepticism by many with the participation of male and female warriors representing all segments of our society. Your glorious movement was attacked on two fronts, on the one hand by on the one hand by the power mongers whose goal is to continue to hold on to money and power and on the other by foreigners and international opportunists who look for their own interests; both seeking to attribute this [Green] movement to Zionism, the United States and their allies.

The pride of the Green movement is in its reliance on the immense strength and independence of the great people of Iran. The Green movement has always maintained its independence from foreign influence. Its values and main goal has always been to revive the ideals and aspirations of Imam Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution and to support the various demands of the noble nation of Iran in its quest for freedom. The Green movement has always sought to achieve its goals through peaceful means, emphasizing the fundamental principles of human dignity, recognizing our nations right to sovereignty and determining their own destiny and demanding the unconditional adherence to the Constitution. As your humble companion, I congratulate you on the occasion of your amazing perseverance and wish to express my deepest condolences on the martyrdom of the beloved children of our proud nation.

Mousavi Remains Incommunicado, Entrance to His Residence Blocked By Security Forces

Mousavi Remains Incommunicado, Entrance to His Residence Blocked By Security Forces
Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Monday February 14th, 2011- Mir Hossein Mousavi & Rahnavard remain in complete isolation with their land line phones and cell phones disconnected as of yesterday. On the morning of Feb 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389] the street where their residence is located was also completely blocked by security forces.

According to reports by Kaleme, all landlines at their residence and their cell phones have been disconnected making it impossible to contact them at this time. The dead end street where their residence is located has been blocked by a police van. Several other police cars are parked behind this van blocking the passage way and restricting access to the public street.

Although Mousavi and Rahnavard have been under illegal pressure from a variety of government agencies for some time now, it looks as though the recent restrictions in the past two days were designed to prevent them from attending the rallies in support of the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia.

Mousavi & Karroubi - The Citizens of Iran are Entitled to Their Rights; They are Neither Microbes nor Dust & Trash!

Mousavi & Karroubi - The Citizens of Iran are Entitled to Their Rights; They are Neither Microbes nor Dust & Trash!
Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Monday November 1st, 2010 - Despite attempts by security forces to prevent Mehdi Karroubi from entering Pastor and visting with Mr. Hossein Mousavi, this meeting took place yesterday at Mousavi's residence as a result of Mousavi's own initiative. The following is a summary of the discussions that took place.

The meeting between Mir Hossein Mossavi and Mehdi Karroubi began with Karroubi expressing regret over the fact that lies and slander have been institutionalized in our country stating: "They made sure that the candidate of their choice was fraudulently elected president during the 9th presidential elections. Both the 8th parliamentary elections and 10th presidential elections were rigged, leading to an explosion of protests by the people; protests that were dealt with in the most violent manner possible. Government owned media outlets use the treasury's wealth to spread lies and insult the opposition and the slightest response from opponents and critics is not tolerated by the pro government media outlets and newspapers. It has reached a point that not only do they not publish any news related to us, but we are also banned from publishing condolences to those who have lost loved ones. They do not tolerate any form of freedom of expression. Rather than ensuring that free and fair elections be held in our country, they decided instead to slaughter any form of freedom, truth and honesty."

While pointing to the lack of tact and wisdom in the manner in which the affairs of the country are being managed, Mousavi stated: "In general no one is opposed to targeted subsidies. The point we are making here is that the necessary work force to manage this type of subsidy program is currently nonexistent. A large segment of the expert task force and those with knowledge have been eliminated. The government should not be proud of the fact that in order to implement the targeted subsidy programs it has been reduced to creating fear by deploying police, basiji and IRGC forces to 2000 locations across Tehran. These gentlemen's management practices and methods have led to the destruction of our economy and other sectors of our society, making it exceedingly more difficult to return to the conditions that our country found itself in 6 years ago [pre Ahmadinejad]."

With the 13th of Aban [anniversary of take over of U.S. Embassy in Tehran 31 years ago] approaching, Mousavi and Karroubi noted: "On the eve of 13th of Aban, Student Day and the Anniversary of the Imam's exile we unfortunately continue to witness great pressure on our country's intellectuals, members of the academia, students, lawyers and journalists. Every day heavier sentences are issued against journalists and not only are they receiving prison sentences but they are also being banned fir decades from practicing their vocation. Well known and established lawyers are accused of defending their clients and condemned to heavy prison sentences in order to intimidate them from taking over the cases of political prisoners. Students and members of the academia are sentenced to long prison terms and exiled to prison far away from their residence, leading to distress, hardship and danger for their families. Despite all the oppressive measures taken by the current government, new and motivated forces join the political scene with the passing of every day and with it the people's Green movement is only getting stronger."

"Creating divisions amongst the various segments in our society and calling tens of millions of individuals such as teachers, laborors, students, professors, women and men in our nation "dust & trash", "incompetent", "microbes" and "members of a sedition" is not in the best interest of our nation. The regime that our dear Imam fought for during 15 years was after citizens obtaining sovereignty over their own destiny, rather than labeling a large segment of our population as enemies. We therefore strongly believe that it is the inherent right of every Iranian citizen to have access to civil rights and labeling them "microbes" and "dust and trash" is unacceptable and a foreign concept to say the least. A healthy society is one that that arises out of the will and vote of its people; a society in which criticism, protests and strikes are natural and considered as basic and fundamental right of its citizens."

"The adventurous foreign policy of the current government has led to a number of resolutions being issued against our country by several international organizations. We are already witnessing the negative impact of these resolutions on the livelihood of our citizens. There is unprecedented poverty, unemployment, closures of manufacturing facilities and indiscriminate imports to the point where even tombstones are imported from abroad. While our people suffer under these conditions, our government has provided grants and loans to foreign and neighboring countries. It is unclear to what extent the Parliament is involved and aware of these activities. Our countries economy has weakened significantly as a result of this mismanagement, but more importantly if we continue on this path of destruction, we may very well witness the demise of the regime. Is this type of mismanagement and splurging to the benefit of our nation? Why is there no transparency so that our citizens can be more aware of the affairs of their own government?"

"In conclusion, rather than waging a fruitless war against the institutions of Human Sciences in our country and demonstrating intolerance even towards your own friends, we urge you to take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of the individuals within our humanities fields; our economists, sociologists, demography specialists and individuals in other branches and empower them to resolve our countries problems with their expertise."

May 8th, 2014 [Kaleme - Mehdi Sharif] – Narges Mousavi criticizes the indifference of the ruling establishment towards her father’s medical condition, expressing concern over the continued delay in providing her father with the critical medical attention he needs. The opposition leader’s youngest daughter states: “Although our parents had been incommunicado this past week, we were hopeful that our father’s medical needs had been taken seriously and that the necessary procedures had been initiated. Unfortunately it has not been the case. We have been told that his treatment was delayed as a result of security related issues. They have promised us however, to commence his treatment by a predefined date.” Narges Mousavi warns: “We are extremely worried about the well being of both our parents and will do everything necessary to ensure that they receive the necessary medical treatment they need.”

The full content of Narges Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

It has been reported that you were allowed to visit with your parents in Akhtar prison. How are they doing? What is the status of your father’s medical treatment?

We had been kept in the dark from Tuesday April 29th, 2014 when my father was taken to the hospital without our knowledge and underwent a series of tests including a coronary angiogram. Despite the fact that we had no contact with our parents last week, we were hopeful that the necessary medical protocols had been followed and that he had received treatment. Unfortunately this has not been the case. We have been been promised however that his treatment will begin by predefined date. Based on our visit this morning, I can say that there has been no significant change in the condition of my parents. The fact that our father’s blood pressure has dropped several times recently continues to concern us. Our mother is also suffering from fluctuating blood sugar levels. We are extremely concerned for the well being of our parents and we will do everything necessary to ensure that they receive adequate medical treatment.

Have security officials explained why Mr. Mousavi’s medical treatment has been delayed?

Apparently they believe that there are some security issues that need to be coordinated. Though I must say that I don’t understand why coordinating the security requirements would be so complicated. If my father’s health was important to them, they would have taken care of the coordination issues long ago. In any event, they have now given us a specific date, and promised that as soon as the security conditions have been met, our father’s treatment will begin.

How would you describe your father’s spirits following his angiogram last week?

My father is in excellent spirits. He was very loving and remains strong and determined. We are not worried about his spirits. Our parents have always a source of encouragement to us, keeping our spirits high. It is their physical health and well being that we are worried about. We are concerned about all the delay tactics and indifference.

May 7th, 2014 – [Kaleme] The detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughters were granted an hour and a half visitation with their father at Akhtar Prison following one week of complete isolation. The opposition leader was hospitalized over night last Tuesday, underwent a number of diagnostics tests including a coronary angiography, and was transferred back to Akhtar Prison without completing the necessary treatment for his heart condition; a condition that has become alarming but according to his children was non-existent prior to his illegal house arrest.

Mousavi’s daughters report that despite numerous assurances by the ruling establishment that actual treatment would commence this week, the opposition leader’s medical treatment has been stalled a
nd he has received no medical attention since returning to house arrest. The family is even more concerned for his health and well being now that they have had the opportunity to visit with him.

The detained leader’s daughters also confirmed today that Mir Hossein Mouavi has yet to receive the letter addressed to him by Ayatollah Haeri Shirazi.

May 5th, 2014

We the children of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard remain completely in the dark with regards to the health and well being of our parents.

Our father underwent an angiography on Tuesday of last week. We were allowed to see our parents briefly the day after the procedure. They transferred our father back to house arrest shortly after the angiography was completed without access to a physician, nurse or medical equipment. We have had no contact whatsoever with our parents. We have not been allowed to call our father. We have not been granted visitation and are completely unaware of his medical condition.

Though hard to believe, the communication channel between the family and Akhtar Prison is currently non existent.

“My Father’s Health Condition is Alarming,” Warns Narges Mousavi

May 4, 2014

Detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughter Narges posted a status on her facebook page today warning Iranians that her father’s health condition is alarming. Mousavi’s youngest daughter emphasized that both her mother and father had no particular ailments prior to their house arrest. Her post reads:

Our parents were put under house arrest without a warning in February of 2010, despite the fact that neither had been charged with a crime. My parents both experienced a significant amount of weight loss during the first three months of their house arrest and gradually started manifesting a variety of symptoms. I would like to reiterate that they were both in good health prior to their house arrest. My father has had to undergo two coronary angioplasties during this four year period. The first time the procedure was performed the family was informed. He was quickly dismissed from the hospital and taken back to house arrest following the first angioplasty, but an ambulance was continuously present outside Akhtar Street just in case his health took a turn for the worse. Father underwent his second angioplasty on Tuesday April 29th, 2014. This time the procedure took place without the family’s knowledge. He was taken to the hospital and rushed back to house arrest upon completion of the procedure without any of us having the opportunity to be present. He is now at Akhtar prison without access to any medical equipment. With the exception of a short phone call that took place upon completion of the second procedure and after warnings by hospital physicians that he was in dire need of medical attention, the family has been kept in the dark with regards to his condition. Our father’s health condition is alarming!

Detained Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Returns to House Arrest Following One Day of Hospitalization

Detained Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Returns to House Arrest Following One Day of Hospitalization
By Banooye Sabz
May 1, 2014

April 30th 2014 [Kaleme] – One day after being hospitalized, detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was reportedly released from the hospital and taken back to house arrest. Mousavi’s daughters found out about their father’s transfer back to Akhtar prison as they were heading to the hospital.

According to reports from Kaleme, upon undergoing a coronary angioplasty the opposition leader was taken back to house arrest at Akhtar street. The physicians attending to Mousavi were reportedly unable to place a permanent small wire mesh called a stent [a standard procedure performed in combination with an angioplasty that helps prop the artery open, decreasing the chance of repeated narrowing] and to perform other necessary procedures as a result of the opposition leader’s current heart condition.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughters were allowed to briefly see their parents and to inquire about their well being. The opposition leader who has lost some weight and looked pale was reported as being determined and in strong spirits. Although distressed by the ordeal they had been forced to endure, the daughters report that Zahra Rahnavard was also in good spirits.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s health took a turn for the worse when he began experiencing both cardiac and digestive problems this past Friday. His family reports that his condition deteriorated significantly by Saturday and a physician was finally allowed to examine him at his bedside on Sunday. Despite the detained leaders dire health, he was not admitted to the hospital until Tuesday April 29th where he underwent a coronary angioplasty and was sent home following the completion of the procedure. Mousavi’s daughters were not informed of the opposition leader’s admittance to the hospital and were not allowed to be present while he was being treated.

Mousavi’s physicians had warned the ruling establishment for months about the detained leader’s deteriorating heart condition and the need for urgent treatment by coronary specialists. Their warnings however seemed to have fallen on deaf ears as his treatment was not only repeatedly delayed but he was also denied access to his trusted physicians.

Tuesday April 29th, 2014 – [Kaleme: Mehdi Sharif] – In an interview with Kaleme Zahra Mousavi, the daughter of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi confirms that her father’s condition turned for the worse on Friday when he began feeling nauseous. By Saturday, Mousavi’s condition had deteriorated significantly and on Sunday a physician was taken to his bedside; yet the detained leader was not transferred to a hospital until Tuesday April 29th when he finally underwent a coronary angiography, a procedure that according to his doctors should have taken place months ago.

The full content of Zahra Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

It has been reported that Mousavi was rushed to the hospital today. Do you have any news regarding this matter?

We have been aware of the fact that our father is suffering from heart problems for some time now and we also knew that our mother is not doing well. They are under so much stress and pressure. We have kept much of this to ourselves and out of the public eye. We kept telling ourselves that things will get better; that things will change. We kept hoping that the apparent changes within the Intelligence Ministry [as a result of the elections and newly elected president and cabinet] will hopefully lead to better conditions behind the walls at Akhtar prison. We are of course fully aware of the powers at play and those who benefit from the status quo. We are not the only ones aware of what is going on. Everyone is cognizant of what is going on. We nevertheless were hopeful that some bare minimum changes would occur at least with regards to our parents’ rights. Unfortunately that has not been the case. We have been aware of the deterioration of our father’s heart condition for some time now. He had not fully recovered from his last hospitalization and yet they never completed his treatment. Our parents have been hostages during this entire time and we had no choice but to remain silent so that we would be allowed to see them once in a blue moon. They literally expected us to visit them inside that cage, witness their deterioration and gradual death and remain silent!

How did you find out today? Did those responsible for their house arrest contact you?

These gentlemen think they live in a vacuum and that the news does not spread, or that only the news they wish to disseminate reaches us. The truth is that there are hundreds of people who are kind to us and act as our eyes and ears keeping us informed and in the loop. It looks as though my father has been feeling ill for quite some time now and the security agents were fully aware of his condition. He was throwing up on Friday and his condition deteriorated significantly by Saturday. On Sunday the physician recommends that he receive urgent medical attention, but the powers that be sill refused to comply. Father was finally transferred to a hospital today. We we neither informed nor allowed to be present. We are his daughters and yet we were completely in the dark about his deteriorating health over the past few days. If something drastic had happened to him on Saturday would anyone have contacted us? Would anyone have been held accountable? Certainly not. This type of tragedy has fallen upon many families in the past few years and no one has been held responsible.

You talk about your father’s deteriorating health. Do you know exactly why he was admitted to the hospital today?

We only know that my father’s health deteriorated significantly on Saturday and that he was admitted to the hospital today. His famiy was neither informed or present. He underwent a stress test at the hospital and he was reportedly not able to complete the test as a result of his failing condition. The physicians then decided to perform a coronary angiography. The procedure took place without the presence of his immediate family members. When father was unable to complete the stress test and they realized that the situation was more complicated than they had anticipated, they eventually contacted a relative (and trusted physician). Until the arrival of his trusted physician he was basically alone. Father’s trusted physician’s explanation is that he did not have access to a phone and because of father’s urgent medical condition he had to make a choice between staying with him or calling us – and given his commitment and loyalty to our father he had to make a difficult choice and was unable to inform us. It goes without saying that he too is under pressure. We have still not been able to talk to him directly, but we know that he was only able to be with our father for a very short time during the angiography. He apparently complained about the situation, but was not allowed to stay with father and was asked to leave. As you can imagine given that we are his daughters it is only natural that we want to be responsible for his health and well being. Narges, Kokab and I want to be responsible for our father’s well being so there are no excuses for the security apparatus to exert unnecessary and undue pressure on our relatives. We are the children of Mousavi and Rahnavard and we have a right to be the first to be informed of their circumstances. Let’s assume for the sake of argument that my father has no heart condition and that his heart functions like the heart of a young 20 year old. Do we not have a right to be informed if something happens to him? Do we not have a right to be beside him? What if god forbid something drastic had happened to him and the powers that be would finally get their wish granted, would it not have been our right to be next to our father during his last moments?

We are sick and tired of the status quo. We have no idea what is happening to them under house arrest and behind closed doors. We are forced to continually wait until they grant us a visitation sometimes once a week or every 10 to 15 days. In between visitations we are always in the dark. Our parents are in complete isolation. This type of house arrest and isolation does not exist anywhere else in the world. This type of house arrest is an innovation that is unique to this regime. We have no idea what they are doing to them under house arrest. We have not been kept informed of their condition. We really have no idea what has become of our parents who have endured so much pressure and pain. They have been banned from communicating with the outside world and we have been forced to remain silent. Though our parents are in good spirits, their lives are not protected. Yes they are in great spirits and they remain highly motivated and engaged – but it does not mean that they are in good health or that they are safe. My words are addressed to those responsible for their house arrest: “Do you truly believe that the way out of this house arrest is to destroy our parents? What are you going to do next? Are we to witness yet another ailment every other day?”

They have treated us without concern over the past few years. They threatened and harassed my sisters and created all sorts of problems for them. We kept so many things to ourselves and remained silent. They have now taken their hostage taking to the next level, hospitalizing our parents and performing medical procedures without the presence of their loved ones. Even the devil himself would not behave this way towards his enemies. All we want is for our people to hear our pleas. We want the people of Iran to be aware of our predicament. What is happening is a part of our nation’s history. If are hands our tied and we are unable to be at our parents’ side, let it be known that it is against our will. Let it be stated that the methods used are unjust and vindictive. Our mother and father have always lived for the people and stood with them. We would like for the Iranian nation to be aware of the journey our parents chose to embark upon and the heavy price they have had to pay.

Narges Mousavi: My Parents Were Perfectly Healthy Prior to their House Arrest ~ We are Highly Suspicious of the Unhealthy Conditions Behind Closed Doors at Akhtar Prison!

Tuesday April 30th 2014 – Narges Mousavi, Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s youngest daughter has informed Kaleme that her father was taken to the hospital with out the knowledge of his daughters. She reiterates that both her mother and father had no specific ailment prior to their house arrest, adding that their medical conditions surfaced post house arrest under unusual and suspicious circumstances. According to Mousavi’s daughter, no one within ruling establishment has taken responsibility for the illegal house arrest of her parents and the prison guards have done something to make them ill. Narges Mousavi is suspicious of the conditions of her parents’ house arrest and believes that the environment at Akhtar prison is unhealthy and unsafe. Though Mir Hossein’s youngest daughter has not been made privy to the details of her father’s medical condition, she reiterates that despite the fact that her father’s health took a turn for the worse on Saturday, security forces refused to take him to the hospital until Tuesday.

The content of Narges Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

Do you have any news of your father’s latest medical condition?

I only found out about this latest episode a half hour ago. My father has not been feeling well for a long time. Everyone was aware that he had developed a heart condition during these past three years of house arrest and yet they kept delaying and postponing his treatment. His health apparently took a turn for the worse on Saturday and they did nothing. We were kept in the dark until a half hour ago.

When was your last visit with your parents? Have you been contacted regarding a possible visitation?

Today would have been one of our routine visitation days. I was anxiously waiting [to hear from them] all morning. I don’t know why, but felt extremely out of sorts all morning. Of course we then received the news that he had been hospitalized. We have no idea how he is doing and what specific procedures have been performed. We don’t know if he’s undergone a stent implant, whether any of his arteries are blocked, or what the nature of his ailment is. We are completely in the dark. They have provided us with no information what so ever! This despite the fact that it is our right to know about our father’s well being. They have no shame. They won’t allow us to speak to them on the phone, nor have they told us which hospital he has been transferred to.

I went to work today and was busy with day to day activities and all along I had no idea that my father had been on a hospital bed. To whom should I express my grief and pain? They specialize in secrecy. They did exactly the same thing the last time father was not feeling well. I would like to reiterate that it is they who have rendered my mother and father ill while imposing an illegal house arrest; a sentence that does not even exist under our legal system.

Given the series of events that have occurred what exactly are your demands?

Our demands are clear. We seek the unconditional release of our parents and accountability by those who have wasted their lives for the past four years. There are so many facts we have chosen not to make public. We remain extremely suspicious of the unhealthy environment behind the closed doors at Akhtar prison. They have completely closed off one side of the house. They have locked all the doors and divided the road and no one has any idea what is happening on the other side of the walls. Every time we demand to know what is going on, we are told that all is fine. My gut feeling is (and I’m not sure how scientific this gut feeling is) that there is something unhealthy and infected about the environment at Akhtar street that has led to our parents becoming so ill. I don’t know what authority or who exactly can investigate this matter, but I have a strong feeling something is not right.

I don’t know of any authority within the establishment that has had the courage to take responsibility for this house arrest. No one has taken responsibility. There is either a lack of accountability or people are afraid. We direct our words however to the people of Iran. We want our people to know that if anything happens to our parents, it is the regime that will be held responsible. We urge people to inform the public so that everyone is aware of our predicament.

BREAKING NEWS | Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Hospitalized
By Banooye Sabz
April 29, 2014

Tuesday April 29th, 2014 – Kalame reports that opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was taken to the hospital today amidst tight security measures. Despite repeated requests in the past few months by Mousavi’s doctors for the urgent need to treat the opposition leader’s heart condition, security forces have continued to deny him medical treatment and kept his family in the dark with regards to his medical records.

According to Mousavi’s physicians he has been in need of an angiography for months. Mousavi’s blood pressure has also been fluctuating and he is suffering from kidney problems. Prior to Norooz (Persian New Year) after suffering from extreme blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness, Mousavi was transferred to a medical facility for a few hours for a series of diagnostic tests, including a cranial ultrasound and tests related to issues with his kidneys. The results of these tests have yet to be made available.

Mousavi’s family has reiterated that the opposition leader did not suffer from a heart condition, nor any symptoms such as blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness prior to his illegal house arrest. As a result, the continued delay by security forces to afford Mir Hossein Mousavi medical attention and in particular to ensure that he receives immediate treatment in relation to his cardiac problems, continues to be of grave concern to the family.

An Unprecedented, Coincidental & Heart Warming Encounter with Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi & Zahra Rahnavard

An Unprecedented, Coincidental & Heart Warming Encounter with Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi & Zahra Rahnavard
By Banooye Sabz
March 18, 2014

March 14th 2014 – According to reports by Kaleme, Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard, under illegal house arrest for over three years, were granted permission to visit with Rahnavard’s old and ailing mother Mrs. Navab Safavi in the presence of security agents today.

In an unexpected turn of events, Mousavi’s and Rahnavard’s visit to Mrs. Navab Safavi’s house coincided with a spontaneous visit by a group of teachers and family members of political prisoners who arrived at the residence of Zahra Rahnavard’s mother in order to pay their respects and show their support, not knowing that Rahnavard and Mousavi had been taken to the house as well.

Though the spontaneous visitors were initially banned by the security agents present from entering Mrs. Navab Safavi’s residence, they were eventually allowed to enter the house and meet with Mousavi and Rahnavard. Mousavi and Rahnavard’s daughters were not present during this spontaneous gathering.

This is the first time in three years of illegal house arrest that Mousavi and Rahnavard have been allowed to visit with any member of the public other than their immediate family members. This while neither the opposition leader nor his wife have been charged with a crime, nor has any official within the ruling establishment taken responsibility for their house arrest or confirmed the legality of such an act.

Zahra Rahimi the wife of Abolfazl Ghadyani a political prisoner at Evin prison who was part of the group that coincidentally arrived at Mrs. Navab Safavi’s house at the same time that Mousavi and Rahnavard were visiting recounted the events as follows: “A number of us have been paying regular visits to the families of martyrs and Green political prisoners. Today we decided to visit Mrs. Rahnavard’s mother. When we arrived at her residence we saw a car parked at the entrance. There were two individuals inside the car and they were looking in our direction. We assumed they were with the security apparatus. Since they did not intervene we rang the door bell and the gate opened. Upon entering the court yard we were met by a number of other agents who began questioning us. They wanted to know why we were there. Though their line of questioning was surprising, we explained that we had come to visit Mrs Rahnavard’s old and ailing mother as we had heard that she is not feeling well. A few minutes later someone came outside from within the residence and said we were allowed to enter.”

Rahimi added: “As we entered the house, to our shock and surprised we realized that Zahra Rahnavard was also present. It goes without saying that we were all elated and at a loss for words. We all greeted her not knowing exactly what to say or how to behave. A female security agent was sitting next to Mrs. Rahnavard. The security agent’s behavior was civil and respectful. We sat next to Mrs. Rahnavard and chatted with her for a few minutes. The other teachers who had accompanied us on this visit were ordinary citizens with no political background. Everyone was so happy to see Mrs. Rahnavard. The visit with was so utterly unexpected and we were all in such shock that all we could think to ask was how she was doing. Mrs Rahnavard first about the families of the other political prisoners, insisting that we send them her regards.”

“Prior to her house arrest, Mrs. Rahnavard was a staunch supporter of the families of political prisoners and she always attended our gatherings. We could always depend on her. She never abandoned us. I could tell that she misses everyone and worries about the families. Mrs Rahnavard told us that their condition has improved and their daughters are now allowed to visit them once a week. In response to our gratitude regarding the improved conditions and our desire to see the house arrest lifted as soon as possible, Mrs. Rahnavard said: “We must all be patient; we must all persevere.”, Rahimi continued.

“Mrs Rahnavard told us that she had lost 14 kilos (approx 30 lbs) in short period of time. Though she looked thinner her face had not changed. Although Mir Hossein’s hair was completely grey, his spirit was strong. Mrs. Rahnavard explained that they were on their way out when we arrived. She said that their visit had not been planned. They had been taken to the hospital for a number of tests and upon leaving the hospital since they were in the vicinity of Mrs. Rahnavard’s mother’s home, the security agent had suggested that they pay her a visit. I asked where Mousavi was and was told he is in another room. I approached the room and asked if we could see him. The security agent standing next to Mousavi was pleasant and said it would be okay. We all entered the room and greeted Mousavi. We were all so nervous but Mousavi calmly greeted everyone and asked how our husbands and other political prisoners were doing. When they were leaving he turned to us and said: “Know that we are doing well.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi & Mehdi Karroubi Meet Despite Severe Security Constraints
By Banooye Sabz
October 31, 2010

Sunday October 31st 2010 – According to Saham News, Mehdi Karroubi visited Mir Hossein Mousavi’s residence today. When security forces assigned to the Pastor neighborhood, first became aware of Karroubi’s presence, based on orders by security officials they tried to prevent Mehdi Karroubi and his security personnel from entering Mousavi’s residence.

In an unprecedented move, when Mir Hossein Mousavi who became aware of the circumstances outside his residence, he took his private car, drove out of the area and brought Karroubi and his security personnel back to his residence. It goes without saying that Mousavi’s actions surprised the security forces present who saw their plan to prevent this meeting fade before their very eyes.

The complete content of this meeting will be published in the near future.

Thursday October 28th, 2010 - A number of individuals dressed in basiji clothes were present at “Moje Ghanoon’s” booth, asking attendees to sign a booklet requesting that the leaders of the sedition be put on trial. The booklet also contained a sketch entitled “The People’s Court”, depicting Mousavi and Karroubi sitting behind a desk in a court of law.

The 17th International Press and Media Exhibition is currently taking place in Tehran and the supporters of the Islamic Republic of Iran have converted the exhibition into a locale advertising attacks against Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi the protesting candidates of last year’s presidential elections.

According to informed sources in Tehran, “Al-Arabiya Net” the walls of the booth for “Moje Ghanoon” a conservative network news outlet were filled with posters and writings requesting that the leaders of the so called sedition, Mousavi and Karroubi be put on trial.

After the rigged presidential elections last year, in which Ahmadinejad was proclaimed president, a wave of protests took place in Tehran and other provinces. Iranian conservatives, including the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, referred to protests that occurred after the elections as a “sedition” and labeled Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Mohammad Khatami former president as the heads of the so called sedition.

According to informed sources, individuals dressed in basiji clothes were present at “Moje Ghanoon’s” booth, asking attendees to sign a booklet requesting that the leaders of the sedition be put on trial. The booklet also contained a sketch entitled “The People’s Court”, depicting Mousavi and Karoubi sitting behind a desk in a court of law.

These events took place at a time when Mousavi and Karroubi have both been under exceedingly more pressure by security forces and supporters of the current government. All comings and goings to their residence are highly controlled and many visitors are prevented from entering their homes. During the holy month of Ramadan, Mehdi Karroubi’s house was also attacked by basiji and plain clothes agents.

It is also worth mentioning that Abbas Jafari Dowlat Abadi, Tehran’s Prosecutor had threatened Mousavi and Karroubi that a case file had been prepared against them and that a trial was in the works. Mohseni Eje’i Iran’s Attorney General and Heidar Moslehi Intelligence Minister had also made similar comments.

In another part of the exhibition, at the booth for “Youth Online” (Javan Online) known for their connection with the IRGC, images of last years unrest were on display, including pictures of Mehdi Karroubi being attacked by government supporters. Karroubi who participated in many of last years protests was repeatedly attacked by government supporters.

It should be noted that many of the media outlets, including conservative media outlets were not present at this year’s exhibition. In a press conference held earlier this week, Mohammad Ali Ramin Depty Press Minister For Iran’s Culture & Islamic Guidance stated: “This year’s exhibition will not include pretentious and deceitful western media outlets. Instead we will be inviting a variety of media outlets from across the world that work in favor of all nations.”

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard Meet with Mehdi Karroubi

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard Meet with Mehdi Karroubi
By Banooye Sabz
September 4, 2010

September 4th, 2010- Saham News: A few hours ago, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard visited Mehdi Karroubi at his residence. This visit was in support of the Karroubi family who had endured numerous attacks on their residence over the past week. Mousavi and Rahnavard began their visit by observing the extensive damage to the building.

In this meeting Fatemeh Karroubi who welcomed them to her home, described the brutal and inhumane attacks by the paid thugs adding: “These individuals, unfortunately without any regard for people’s rights or the sanctity of the nights of Qhadr, set about destroying the property, insulting and violating the rights of the citizens and neighbors. They even went as far as stripping a Muslim woman of her chador.” Fatemeh Karroubi continued: “I hope in the history of our revolution we will never again be forced to witness such behavior.”

While expressing extreme concern over the unfortunate and unacceptable events that took place during the nights of Qhadr, Mousavi stated: “These individuals are no longer willing to respect the sanctity of these nights. Engaging in such unacceptable behavior only demonstrates the level to which they have diverged from and are unfamiliar with the principles of Islam. They first engage in the destruction and violation of people’s rights and seconds later hold a prayer ceremony! This type of behavior is a clear sign of the dichotomy between their behavior and beliefs.”

While welcoming Mousavi and Rahnavard and thanking them for their visit, Karroubi provided the couple with a detailed account of the previous five nights. It is worth mentioning that on the day of the incident, Mousavi contacted Karroubi by phone and informed Karroubi of his readiness to be at his house if desired.

Zahra Rahnavard - I Have No Direct Affiliation with the Kaleme Website & Reject All Forms of Censorship

Zahra Rahnavard - I Have No Direct Affiliation with the Kaleme Website & Reject All Forms of Censorship
By Banooye Sabz
September 27, 2010

September 25th, 2010 - Summary: Zahra Rahnavard: "I would like to state clearly and unequivocally that I have no direct affiliation with the Kaleme website. I personally believe that comments should never be censored, unless our objective is to glorify, idolize and worship - a tendency that has unfortunately existed throughout our country's long history. Criticism and guidance are both necessary and needed. However, with regards to your last point in which you ask what will happen if Mousavi would come to power, my response is that the goal was never for Mousavi to come to power. The objective was to make sure that the people come to power; that the people are ensured security; that the people obtain their rights. The intention was never then and will not be in the future to bring an individual to power once again, but to ensure that our society regains its legitimate and rightful power."

Kaleme: Khodnevis website has conducted a critical interview with Dr. Zahra Rahnavard. Nikahang Kowsar, the interviewer has written the following introduction: "Having a discussion with Ms Rahnavard is not an easy task. From the first cell phone conversation, when the individual who answered said: "I wish I were Ms. Rahnavard." until the time I finally received written responses to our questions took approximately two months. Some of the questions by Khodnevis are related to events happening at that time. We wanted to have a question and answer session, but Zahra Rahnavard is known as one of the prominent and most direct individuals within the Green movement. In many ways she is not as dogmatic as Mir Hossein Mousavi and she welcomes all forms of criticism. Months ago, when we were attacked for asking questions regarding the revolution's past and in particular the "Imam's Golden Era", Ms. Rahnavard's comments in her interview with Roozonline were like a bucket of cold water extinguishing the blaze of criticism and the nagging of the opponents. She had claimed that asking questions and criticism even by the media associated with the totalitarian rulers is useful and necessary. Naturally, many whose aim was to create an environment of silence chose to ignore this part of her comments. It was around this same time that because of my activities, I was threatened by a group that called themselves "anonymous defenders" of the Green movement. I brought this point up with Ms. Rahnavard through someone close to her and requested to talk to her. My first question to her was regarding this same issue. My goal was to pose questions that many were seeking answers to, however, I would have preferred that this discussion had taken place over the phone so that I could also ask questions to her responses. Since that was not the case, many questions remain unasked, even after her response to the last question we sent to her. As such we ask that she responds to them at her convenience. We thank her for accepting our questions and for responding to them and we are hopeful that the communication lines will always remain open."

The content of the interview is as follows:

In the past few months, I have been threatened repeatedly by individuals who called themselves Green; individuals who have tried very hard to discredit me online, their behavior has ranged from insults, to slander, character assassination and most recently an attempt to eliminate my presence online due to my continued insistence to ask questions. Just recently, a few individuals even threatened to kill me. The coordinated effort was very interesting to me. A few months ago one of the journalists involved with a Green media outlet threatened to make me regret all my activities online. According to a number of social activists who are affiliated with this reporter, a group of individuals are seeking to discredit me in order to stifle any questions begin asked, using my elimination as a means to scare others. In other words using me as an example for others. Do you have any remarks for this group? If they claim to be Green, then what is the difference between them and Ansar-e Hezbollah and other vigilante groups?

Criticism is both a blessing and an opportunity for the person being criticized. Even the person criticizing can be criticized and should view the criticism as a form of opportunity. If we allow ourselves to criticize and be criticized, we will not only grow mentally and as individuals, but we will also avoid being self absorbed and more importantly from a political point of view, we will be able to protect ourselves from tyranny and dictatorships. Said more simply, criticism of you, me, Mousavi, the Green movement, the people, only means that there is room for improvement for all of us. Of course a cartoonist usually has their own specific style of criticism, often blended with sarcasm and a harsh tone. Criticism from a humorist or comedian comes in one form; criticism from a poet comes in another and in the realm of literature, poetry and newspaper reporting, criticism has an even more different and specific tones. Once, Mr. Golagha criticized a poem I had written about the war. He made fun of the different ways in which I had used the word "Now". At the time I was upset with the ironic way in which my poetic technique was being criticized and as a result, I also responded to him critically. Now I realize that I was too severe and that I should have welcomed his criticism. Of course it goes without saying, that back then there had been no coup and both I and other people were calmer than they are today. Perhaps your critics are making reference to your "Crocodile" cartoon [Here reference is made to a cartoon Nikahang Kowsar did of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi in which there was a play on words referring to Mesbah as "Temsah" or crocodile] and because they hold you in such high regard when it comes to justice and criticism that they expect you to also support the friends and companions who have protested against the despotic power. I however, tell these friends and critics who complain, of my own personal experiences. It is important that we all refrain from self indulgence and self worship and to welcome all forms of language, expression and criticism from the intellectual and artistic society.

Naturally, not everyone's memories of the revolution are the same as yours. Many view the "Imam's Golden Era" differently. Many do not reflect positively on the Imam’s "ideals". Do you not believe that too much emphasis on these matters may lead to more divisiveness?

We all have different individual memories. We also have memories that are similar. Those years included dignity and glory and errors, mistakes and excesses. I have made this point consistently over the past 30 years. There was room for expressing both the greatness associated with that era and criticizing the procedural short comings and fanaticism. As critical intellectuals, fully integrated in the university atmosphere and having expressed our disappointment, we must remember in our thoughts and beliefs that we only have 14 innocent, no more no less [reference here to Islam's 14 Imams]. As such no one should be viewed as "the absolute" power or omnipotent. Why not instead agree on our liberal and democratic values and principles? Why not focus on the rule of law and making the Constitution our common axis? This while emphasizing that no where in the world is any constitution considered a divine revelation and as such all Constitutions are reviewed and amended every so often. At the same time, we are a pluralistic nation, with a variety of tastes, thoughts, beliefs, races, cultures, and languages. We are a nation with an ability to reflect upon our rich history, with an intellectual maturity and strength of character that understands the importance of pursing our ideas. Why do you think that ideology can overcome the maturity of a nation?

A large segment of the middle class has a different view point regarding the revolution. There is a large majority of the population that remains silent; the gray area of the population per say, and it seems that there is a need to work harder to attract that segment to the movement. Why have Mr. Mousavi's statements not had the desired impact on this segment of society? Why does it look as though Mr. Mousavi's main concern is the deteriorating level of support?

I believe that our entire 30 year experience at this juncture and after the 10th presidential election is once again being questioned through our criticism and our judgments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, point of view and preferences and they are also entitled to fight for achieving those ideals. We have come to the realization and conclusion today that the magnificent rainbow of unity within our nation is a kaleidoscope made up of many colors. This is a significant experience in and of itself. The plurality of this unity is philosophical and political, social and cultural. Within this kaleidoscope, why not allow for all colors to exist side by side? Why should Mousavi, a religious man and a supporter of Khomeini not be entitled to honestly wear his true colors? He has stated repeatedly that he stands with you, that he stands as one individual amongst the myriad of colors within the rainbow of our society; a rainbow that consists of a variety of thoughts, tastes, cultures, ethnic backgrounds and languages. This kaleidoscope consists of the most religious individuals and people with other beliefs and ideologies. Freedom and democracy include every color. Why not allow Mousavi, an individual who is both religious and friendly towards Imam Khomeini to remember him fondly? It goes without saying, however, that we Muslims have no more than 14 innocent (referring to the 14 Imams after Mohammad), and no one is considered the absolute power or omnipotent. While it goes without saying that anyone in the political or religious realm is open to criticism, we must also accept that Imam Khomeini led a revolution that resulted in the collapse of an authoritarian regime and an old and failing police state that was under foreign influence. A large segment of our society believes in Imam Khomeini and continues to support him.

What is your view on freedom of speech? How does Mir Hossein Mousavi view this subject? Many question what will happen when Mr. Mousavi comes to power, when the Kaleme website currently censors comments that are respectful in nature.

Both Mousavi and are strong believers in freedom of speech, freedom of thought and the freedom of press. This was the main reason we became involved in the 10th presidential elections. Personally, I would have preferred to express my opinions regarding our nation's prosperity and freedom and political, international, economic and cultural issues outside the framework of the elections, however, as we are all aware, the events of the past year made it not possible. I would like to state clearly and unequivocally that I have no direct affiliation with the Kaleme website. I personally believe that comments should never be censored, unless our objective is to glorify, idolize and worship - a tendency that has unfortunately existed throughout our country's long history. Criticism and guidance are both necessary and needed. However, in response to your last point in which you ask what will happen if Mousavi would come to power, my response is that the goal was never for Mousavi to come to power. The objective was to make sure that the people come to power; that the people are ensured security; that the people obtain their rights. The intention was never then and will not be in the future to bring an individual to power, but to ensure that our society regains its legitimate and rightful power.

Even though many of the letters written by the Imam to Mr. Mousavi have been distributed amongst some people, the majority of people are still unaware of their content. It looks as though the experiences of 1988 and 1989 were unpleasant to say the least for Mr. Mousavi who was prime minister at the time. In other words, it looks as though he had less power. When the head of a government has insufficient power, he of course cannot be held responsible for many of the actions of his own government. Why did Mr. Mousavi decide to come back to the political arena? Why did he come back, even though he was aware that he did not have the support of the armed forces and many of the forces loyal to the past and that it would mean that in the event of victory, given the nature of the regime, his hands would be tied?

I don't believe that if Mousavi or Mr. Karroubi had become president in this past election, they would have not been successful in their presidency. Mainly because the Islamic Revolution was quickly derailed from its foundation. Many of the events and deviations that took place that led to the crisis that our country is facing right now stem from the rigged election and when this coup government came to power and their actions became apparent. I believe that these events are an important step for our nation in our quest for democracy, freedom and the rule of law. I am hopeful that these objectives will be realized through our peaceful reform movement.

Why is it so difficult to talk about the 80s? Understandably, a terrorist group had altered the environment within our society. Was it right however, to so easily eliminate so many prisoners from this group, in the summer of 1988? Is it feasible to accept that the Prime Minister at the time was unaware of these events? Doesn't the silence that followed these events, in a way translate into acceptance and agreement with the events that occurred?

Of course as you pointed out in your question, the crimes and terrorist acts of the group you referred to is not hidden to anyone. However, revenge by the opposing side was also a big mistake and cannot be disregarded nor accepted in any form. As has been stated repeatedly in the past, neither Mr. Khamenei nor Mr. Mousavi were aware of these crimes; nor were these acts within the scope of their responsibilities. There has of course never been any justification, nor has there been silence. The events that occurred were outside the legal framework and acceptable human behavior. In the many question and answer sessions since, these events have always been denounced. It goes without saying that these events are permanent, dark stains on our history that will never be removed.

Have you ever gone to Khavaran [cemetery in south east of Tehran] to extend your condolences to the families of religious minorities, those who lost their loved ones in the 80s and have buried them there? If not, when do you intend to do so that perhaps the distances can be narrowed and the differences mended?

Mr. Kowsar, what exactly do you wish to convey? I wish you were in Iran and directly exposed to the police state and suffocation that exists in our country. Do you believe that I am idly sitting here in a rocking chair with a fruit juice in one hand, crossing my legs and leisurely reading Harry Potter books or memorizing lines from the story written about Hossein Kard Shabastari? Do you believe that you reside with the freedom seekers, while we are living without worries and conspiring with the criminals? Understand that it is not so; we are all part of one family. We have all had our family members or loved ones imprisoned; we have all endured pain and anguish; we have all endured torture and paid a high price; we have all sat dressed in black in our cemeteries and mourned the death of our martyrs and loved ones. Why don't you come and pay a visit to Iran and be with us? Or at least read the biographies, become aware of our dire circumstances, of the electric batons we've endured, of the pepper spray in our eyes, of our injured lungs, of the interrogations in the streets, of character assassination of journalists and those involved in the digital world so that maybe then you can better understand what we are going through and in doing so not abandon the Green movement.
