May 8th, 2014 [Kaleme - Mehdi Sharif] – Narges Mousavi criticizes the indifference of the ruling establishment towards her father’s medical condition, expressing concern over the continued delay in providing her father with the critical medical attention he needs. The opposition leader’s youngest daughter states: “Although our parents had been incommunicado this past week, we were hopeful that our father’s medical needs had been taken seriously and that the necessary procedures had been initiated. Unfortunately it has not been the case. We have been told that his treatment was delayed as a result of security related issues. They have promised us however, to commence his treatment by a predefined date.” Narges Mousavi warns: “We are extremely worried about the well being of both our parents and will do everything necessary to ensure that they receive the necessary medical treatment they need.”

The full content of Narges Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

It has been reported that you were allowed to visit with your parents in Akhtar prison. How are they doing? What is the status of your father’s medical treatment?

We had been kept in the dark from Tuesday April 29th, 2014 when my father was taken to the hospital without our knowledge and underwent a series of tests including a coronary angiogram. Despite the fact that we had no contact with our parents last week, we were hopeful that the necessary medical protocols had been followed and that he had received treatment. Unfortunately this has not been the case. We have been been promised however that his treatment will begin by predefined date. Based on our visit this morning, I can say that there has been no significant change in the condition of my parents. The fact that our father’s blood pressure has dropped several times recently continues to concern us. Our mother is also suffering from fluctuating blood sugar levels. We are extremely concerned for the well being of our parents and we will do everything necessary to ensure that they receive adequate medical treatment.

Have security officials explained why Mr. Mousavi’s medical treatment has been delayed?

Apparently they believe that there are some security issues that need to be coordinated. Though I must say that I don’t understand why coordinating the security requirements would be so complicated. If my father’s health was important to them, they would have taken care of the coordination issues long ago. In any event, they have now given us a specific date, and promised that as soon as the security conditions have been met, our father’s treatment will begin.

How would you describe your father’s spirits following his angiogram last week?

My father is in excellent spirits. He was very loving and remains strong and determined. We are not worried about his spirits. Our parents have always a source of encouragement to us, keeping our spirits high. It is their physical health and well being that we are worried about. We are concerned about all the delay tactics and indifference.

May 7th, 2014 – [Kaleme] The detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughters were granted an hour and a half visitation with their father at Akhtar Prison following one week of complete isolation. The opposition leader was hospitalized over night last Tuesday, underwent a number of diagnostics tests including a coronary angiography, and was transferred back to Akhtar Prison without completing the necessary treatment for his heart condition; a condition that has become alarming but according to his children was non-existent prior to his illegal house arrest.

Mousavi’s daughters report that despite numerous assurances by the ruling establishment that actual treatment would commence this week, the opposition leader’s medical treatment has been stalled a
nd he has received no medical attention since returning to house arrest. The family is even more concerned for his health and well being now that they have had the opportunity to visit with him.

The detained leader’s daughters also confirmed today that Mir Hossein Mouavi has yet to receive the letter addressed to him by Ayatollah Haeri Shirazi.

May 5th, 2014

We the children of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard remain completely in the dark with regards to the health and well being of our parents.

Our father underwent an angiography on Tuesday of last week. We were allowed to see our parents briefly the day after the procedure. They transferred our father back to house arrest shortly after the angiography was completed without access to a physician, nurse or medical equipment. We have had no contact whatsoever with our parents. We have not been allowed to call our father. We have not been granted visitation and are completely unaware of his medical condition.

Though hard to believe, the communication channel between the family and Akhtar Prison is currently non existent.

“My Father’s Health Condition is Alarming,” Warns Narges Mousavi

Detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughter Narges posted a status on her facebook page today warning Iranians that her father’s health condition is alarming. Mousavi’s youngest daughter emphasized that both her mother and father had no particular ailments prior to their house arrest. Her post reads:

Our parents were put under house arrest without a warning in February of 2010, despite the fact that neither had been charged with a crime. My parents both experienced a significant amount of weight loss during the first three months of their house arrest and gradually started manifesting a variety of symptoms. I would like to reiterate that they were both in good health prior to their house arrest. My father has had to undergo two coronary angioplasties during this four year period. The first time the procedure was performed the family was informed. He was quickly dismissed from the hospital and taken back to house arrest following the first angioplasty, but an ambulance was continuously present outside Akhtar Street just in case his health took a turn for the worse. Father underwent his second angioplasty on Tuesday April 29th, 2014. This time the procedure took place without the family’s knowledge. He was taken to the hospital and rushed back to house arrest upon completion of the procedure without any of us having the opportunity to be present. He is now at Akhtar prison without access to any medical equipment. With the exception of a short phone call that took place upon completion of the second procedure and after warnings by hospital physicians that he was in dire need of medical attention, the family has been kept in the dark with regards to his condition. Our father’s health condition is alarming!

Detained Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Returns to House Arrest Following One Day of Hospitalization

Detained Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Returns to House Arrest Following One Day of Hospitalization

April 30th 2014 [Kaleme] – One day after being hospitalized, detained opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was reportedly released from the hospital and taken back to house arrest. Mousavi’s daughters found out about their father’s transfer back to Akhtar prison as they were heading to the hospital.

According to reports from Kaleme, upon undergoing a coronary angioplasty the opposition leader was taken back to house arrest at Akhtar street. The physicians attending to Mousavi were reportedly unable to place a permanent small wire mesh called a stent [a standard procedure performed in combination with an angioplasty that helps prop the artery open, decreasing the chance of repeated narrowing] and to perform other necessary procedures as a result of the opposition leader’s current heart condition.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s daughters were allowed to briefly see their parents and to inquire about their well being. The opposition leader who has lost some weight and looked pale was reported as being determined and in strong spirits. Although distressed by the ordeal they had been forced to endure, the daughters report that Zahra Rahnavard was also in good spirits.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s health took a turn for the worse when he began experiencing both cardiac and digestive problems this past Friday. His family reports that his condition deteriorated significantly by Saturday and a physician was finally allowed to examine him at his bedside on Sunday. Despite the detained leaders dire health, he was not admitted to the hospital until Tuesday April 29th where he underwent a coronary angioplasty and was sent home following the completion of the procedure. Mousavi’s daughters were not informed of the opposition leader’s admittance to the hospital and were not allowed to be present while he was being treated.

Mousavi’s physicians had warned the ruling establishment for months about the detained leader’s deteriorating heart condition and the need for urgent treatment by coronary specialists. Their warnings however seemed to have fallen on deaf ears as his treatment was not only repeatedly delayed but he was also denied access to his trusted physicians.

Tuesday April 29th, 2014 – [Kaleme: Mehdi Sharif] – In an interview with Kaleme Zahra Mousavi, the daughter of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi confirms that her father’s condition turned for the worse on Friday when he began feeling nauseous. By Saturday, Mousavi’s condition had deteriorated significantly and on Sunday a physician was taken to his bedside; yet the detained leader was not transferred to a hospital until Tuesday April 29th when he finally underwent a coronary angiography, a procedure that according to his doctors should have taken place months ago.

The full content of Zahra Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

It has been reported that Mousavi was rushed to the hospital today. Do you have any news regarding this matter?

We have been aware of the fact that our father is suffering from heart problems for some time now and we also knew that our mother is not doing well. They are under so much stress and pressure. We have kept much of this to ourselves and out of the public eye. We kept telling ourselves that things will get better; that things will change. We kept hoping that the apparent changes within the Intelligence Ministry [as a result of the elections and newly elected president and cabinet] will hopefully lead to better conditions behind the walls at Akhtar prison. We are of course fully aware of the powers at play and those who benefit from the status quo. We are not the only ones aware of what is going on. Everyone is cognizant of what is going on. We nevertheless were hopeful that some bare minimum changes would occur at least with regards to our parents’ rights. Unfortunately that has not been the case. We have been aware of the deterioration of our father’s heart condition for some time now. He had not fully recovered from his last hospitalization and yet they never completed his treatment. Our parents have been hostages during this entire time and we had no choice but to remain silent so that we would be allowed to see them once in a blue moon. They literally expected us to visit them inside that cage, witness their deterioration and gradual death and remain silent!

How did you find out today? Did those responsible for their house arrest contact you?

These gentlemen think they live in a vacuum and that the news does not spread, or that only the news they wish to disseminate reaches us. The truth is that there are hundreds of people who are kind to us and act as our eyes and ears keeping us informed and in the loop. It looks as though my father has been feeling ill for quite some time now and the security agents were fully aware of his condition. He was throwing up on Friday and his condition deteriorated significantly by Saturday. On Sunday the physician recommends that he receive urgent medical attention, but the powers that be sill refused to comply. Father was finally transferred to a hospital today. We we neither informed nor allowed to be present. We are his daughters and yet we were completely in the dark about his deteriorating health over the past few days. If something drastic had happened to him on Saturday would anyone have contacted us? Would anyone have been held accountable? Certainly not. This type of tragedy has fallen upon many families in the past few years and no one has been held responsible.

You talk about your father’s deteriorating health. Do you know exactly why he was admitted to the hospital today?

We only know that my father’s health deteriorated significantly on Saturday and that he was admitted to the hospital today. His famiy was neither informed or present. He underwent a stress test at the hospital and he was reportedly not able to complete the test as a result of his failing condition. The physicians then decided to perform a coronary angiography. The procedure took place without the presence of his immediate family members. When father was unable to complete the stress test and they realized that the situation was more complicated than they had anticipated, they eventually contacted a relative (and trusted physician). Until the arrival of his trusted physician he was basically alone. Father’s trusted physician’s explanation is that he did not have access to a phone and because of father’s urgent medical condition he had to make a choice between staying with him or calling us – and given his commitment and loyalty to our father he had to make a difficult choice and was unable to inform us. It goes without saying that he too is under pressure. We have still not been able to talk to him directly, but we know that he was only able to be with our father for a very short time during the angiography. He apparently complained about the situation, but was not allowed to stay with father and was asked to leave. As you can imagine given that we are his daughters it is only natural that we want to be responsible for his health and well being. Narges, Kokab and I want to be responsible for our father’s well being so there are no excuses for the security apparatus to exert unnecessary and undue pressure on our relatives. We are the children of Mousavi and Rahnavard and we have a right to be the first to be informed of their circumstances. Let’s assume for the sake of argument that my father has no heart condition and that his heart functions like the heart of a young 20 year old. Do we not have a right to be informed if something happens to him? Do we not have a right to be beside him? What if god forbid something drastic had happened to him and the powers that be would finally get their wish granted, would it not have been our right to be next to our father during his last moments?

We are sick and tired of the status quo. We have no idea what is happening to them under house arrest and behind closed doors. We are forced to continually wait until they grant us a visitation sometimes once a week or every 10 to 15 days. In between visitations we are always in the dark. Our parents are in complete isolation. This type of house arrest and isolation does not exist anywhere else in the world. This type of house arrest is an innovation that is unique to this regime. We have no idea what they are doing to them under house arrest. We have not been kept informed of their condition. We really have no idea what has become of our parents who have endured so much pressure and pain. They have been banned from communicating with the outside world and we have been forced to remain silent. Though our parents are in good spirits, their lives are not protected. Yes they are in great spirits and they remain highly motivated and engaged – but it does not mean that they are in good health or that they are safe. My words are addressed to those responsible for their house arrest: “Do you truly believe that the way out of this house arrest is to destroy our parents? What are you going to do next? Are we to witness yet another ailment every other day?”

They have treated us without concern over the past few years. They threatened and harassed my sisters and created all sorts of problems for them. We kept so many things to ourselves and remained silent. They have now taken their hostage taking to the next level, hospitalizing our parents and performing medical procedures without the presence of their loved ones. Even the devil himself would not behave this way towards his enemies. All we want is for our people to hear our pleas. We want the people of Iran to be aware of our predicament. What is happening is a part of our nation’s history. If are hands our tied and we are unable to be at our parents’ side, let it be known that it is against our will. Let it be stated that the methods used are unjust and vindictive. Our mother and father have always lived for the people and stood with them. We would like for the Iranian nation to be aware of the journey our parents chose to embark upon and the heavy price they have had to pay.

Tuesday April 30th 2014 – Narges Mousavi, Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi’s youngest daughter has informed Kaleme that her father was taken to the hospital with out the knowledge of his daughters. She reiterates that both her mother and father had no specific ailment prior to their house arrest, adding that their medical conditions surfaced post house arrest under unusual and suspicious circumstances. According to Mousavi’s daughter, no one within ruling establishment has taken responsibility for the illegal house arrest of her parents and the prison guards have done something to make them ill. Narges Mousavi is suspicious of the conditions of her parents’ house arrest and believes that the environment at Akhtar prison is unhealthy and unsafe. Though Mir Hossein’s youngest daughter has not been made privy to the details of her father’s medical condition, she reiterates that despite the fact that her father’s health took a turn for the worse on Saturday, security forces refused to take him to the hospital until Tuesday.

The content of Narges Mousavi’s interview with Kaleme is as follows:

Do you have any news of your father’s latest medical condition?

I only found out about this latest episode a half hour ago. My father has not been feeling well for a long time. Everyone was aware that he had developed a heart condition during these past three years of house arrest and yet they kept delaying and postponing his treatment. His health apparently took a turn for the worse on Saturday and they did nothing. We were kept in the dark until a half hour ago.

When was your last visit with your parents? Have you been contacted regarding a possible visitation?

Today would have been one of our routine visitation days. I was anxiously waiting [to hear from them] all morning. I don’t know why, but felt extremely out of sorts all morning. Of course we then received the news that he had been hospitalized. We have no idea how he is doing and what specific procedures have been performed. We don’t know if he’s undergone a stent implant, whether any of his arteries are blocked, or what the nature of his ailment is. We are completely in the dark. They have provided us with no information what so ever! This despite the fact that it is our right to know about our father’s well being. They have no shame. They won’t allow us to speak to them on the phone, nor have they told us which hospital he has been transferred to.

I went to work today and was busy with day to day activities and all along I had no idea that my father had been on a hospital bed. To whom should I express my grief and pain? They specialize in secrecy. They did exactly the same thing the last time father was not feeling well. I would like to reiterate that it is they who have rendered my mother and father ill while imposing an illegal house arrest; a sentence that does not even exist under our legal system.

Given the series of events that have occurred what exactly are your demands?

Our demands are clear. We seek the unconditional release of our parents and accountability by those who have wasted their lives for the past four years. There are so many facts we have chosen not to make public. We remain extremely suspicious of the unhealthy environment behind the closed doors at Akhtar prison. They have completely closed off one side of the house. They have locked all the doors and divided the road and no one has any idea what is happening on the other side of the walls. Every time we demand to know what is going on, we are told that all is fine. My gut feeling is (and I’m not sure how scientific this gut feeling is) that there is something unhealthy and infected about the environment at Akhtar street that has led to our parents becoming so ill. I don’t know what authority or who exactly can investigate this matter, but I have a strong feeling something is not right.

I don’t know of any authority within the establishment that has had the courage to take responsibility for this house arrest. No one has taken responsibility. There is either a lack of accountability or people are afraid. We direct our words however to the people of Iran. We want our people to know that if anything happens to our parents, it is the regime that will be held responsible. We urge people to inform the public so that everyone is aware of our predicament.

BREAKING NEWS | Opposition Leader Mir Hossein Mousavi Hospitalized
By Banooye Sabz
April 29, 2014

Tuesday April 29th, 2014 – Kalame reports that opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was taken to the hospital today amidst tight security measures. Despite repeated requests in the past few months by Mousavi’s doctors for the urgent need to treat the opposition leader’s heart condition, security forces have continued to deny him medical treatment and kept his family in the dark with regards to his medical records.

According to Mousavi’s physicians he has been in need of an angiography for months. Mousavi’s blood pressure has also been fluctuating and he is suffering from kidney problems. Prior to Norooz (Persian New Year) after suffering from extreme blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness, Mousavi was transferred to a medical facility for a few hours for a series of diagnostic tests, including a cranial ultrasound and tests related to issues with his kidneys. The results of these tests have yet to be made available.

Mousavi’s family has reiterated that the opposition leader did not suffer from a heart condition, nor any symptoms such as blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness prior to his illegal house arrest. As a result, the continued delay by security forces to afford Mir Hossein Mousavi medical attention and in particular to ensure that he receives immediate treatment in relation to his cardiac problems, continues to be of grave concern to the family.
